My grandmother's house was just a few meters past the German
front-line -that is, what was left of it. There were twelve large artillery
holes. Each one measured at least two meters in diameter. Inside we found only
rubble. Everything else was destroyed.
As the house was on the frontline, it was used as a toilet by
the two armies - it was full of excrement. Instead of furniture, we found only
wooden splinters. There was not a single pane of glass in any of the
windows.
Sometimes, however inexplicable things happen. Next to a
completely shattered cabinet was standing, completely intact, a big glass door.
To this day, I cannot understand how that could happen. In the kitchen we found
cups that seemed intact, yet when we touched them, they turned into powder-due
to explosions!
We did not find any food and of course no water or electricity.
Winter was coming -How could we survive in this condition?
It was only 27 days before that the war had begun. However, for
us, it seemed an eternity.
Some pessimist considered that the war would end next spring,
and some optimist that it would end before Christmas. Both of them were a
"little" wrong!
Terrible years of German occupation begun. We had to adapt to
completely different and dangerous conditions. I entered a new stage of my
life.
P.S. I still have contact with the "little baby", (my cousin) he retired last
year. My aunt still lives and recently celebrated her 96th birthday.
