Descripción del libro usado "A practical course of english pronunciation"
|
 |
A Practical Course of English Pronunciation a perceptual approach.
This new approach to English pronunciation provides, alongside Professor Gimson''s Introduction to the Pronunciation of English, a companion course spcifically designed for the learnr of English as a second or foreign language.
The acquisition of new phonetic skills requires intnsive and structured practice, especially in the case of the adult learner, who has often first to recognize and eliminate incorrectly-acquired dhabits of pronunciation. Professor Gimson has therefore adopted a perceptual approach: the course in the first place trains the learner to distinguish between correct and incorrect sounds in English, before proceeding to develop his pronunciation skills. The course is divided into four main sections, on vowels, consonants, accentuation and rhythm, and intonation. Each setion gives relevant introductory information on the features of English pronunciation to be practised, and provides a series of graded drills. Where appropriate, the reader is referred to fuller theoretical descriptions in the Introduction to the Pronunciation of English.
The recorded drills, available separately on tape or cassettes, form an integral part of the course; their arrangement allows the learner to select units to correspond to his own pronunciation difficulties, his learning speed and the time he has available.
As well as providing for those studying under the guidance of a teacher and with the aid of a language laboratory, the course is designed for the individual learner with playback facilities, and is available in learning packs of course-book plus cassette recording.
This book is quite assured of becoming quickly recognized as an indispensable aid to a very wide range of teachers and students. Journal of the international Phonetic Association.
