Descripción del libro usado "Northanger abbey and persuasion"
Northanger Abbey, the first novel by Jane Austen, was begun in 1798, and published with Persuasion in 1818. The main plot centres round Catherine Morland, who is taken to Bath for the season, and there meets Henry, the son of the eccentric General Tilney. Catherine falls in love with Henry who obtains his father''s approval to invite her to Northanger Abbey, the medieval seat of the Tilneys. Here, Catherine, already under the spell of the Gothic romances so popular in England at the end of the eighteenth century, conjures up a weird series of happenings, only to suffer acute humiliation when her suspicions are discovered. General Tilney forbids Henry to have anything further to do with Catherine. However Henry takes a hand in shaping his own destiny and all troubles and difiiculties are eventually resolved.
Persuasion was Jane Austen''s last work and is drawn partly from her own experience. The chief character is Sir Walter Elliot, a foolish and spendthrift Baronet and widower, who lets his seat, Kellynch Hall, to Admiral and Mrs. Croft. Sir Walter has two unmarried daughters - Elizabeth, haughty and 29, and Anne, pretty, inteliigent, and a year or two younger. Some years beforee, Anne had been engaged to a young naval officer, Frederick Wentworth, the brother of Mrs. Croft, but gossip brought the engagement to an end. The letting of Kellynch Hall brings Anne and Frederick together again, and the story is concerned with the gradual revival of their passion. There ara impediments and entanglements in which the subtle interplay of characters is portrayed with consummate artistry and the story is wrought out to its conclusion in masterly faschion.
