I remember very well those times, before the World War II, when I
was a young boy... the decade of 1930!
It was fascinating to live when there were still many places
untouched by humans. It was possible to see clear sky over big cities, to see virgin forests, to learn how the
people lived originally and not changed by
commercialism and tourist invasions.
Today, the world looks the same everywhere. It's a cross between
Hollywood, Disneyland and McDonald. Millions of tourists wandering everywhere
and most of them interested in nothing, other than buying souvenirs (made in
China), going to nightclubs, and enjoying themselves on cruise ships or in
luxury hotels.
So-called adventure trips are anything but adventure. Everything
is prepared beforehand; when they will be going, for how long, how they will
travel, where they will sleep, how much it will cost...
everything.
However, that is not adventure! Adventure is a surprise -Could be
bad or good. It is the experience of something unexpected and not organized
beforehand.
I pity all the thrill seekers. They want danger, but they don't
want real danger. The supposed danger is only ersatz danger; it is all prepared,
organized and paid for! There is little risk, only emotion.
When I was a young boy, I did not need artificial danger, I
experienced far too many real ones.
I will try to compare these two worlds, the one of today and the
other of my youth.
Now we travel by cars instead of tramways or horse carriages -by
airplanes instead of trains- we have television instead of crystal-radio (now
nobody even knows what that is), etc. The difference in all aspects of life is
enormous; however, I think that before the quality of life was
better.
I cannot even imagine how the world will look after 80 years
(2086) -even in the unlikely event that growth remains the same. However, it
want!
