This is a detailed account of the history and development of the remote and windsweept islands that make up our southernmost colony and of the British community whose home it is.
The first comprehensive book on the Falklands for thirty-six years, it is the outcome of research begun by Mrs.
Cawkell a few years ago for a series of talks that she broadcast in the Islands. Sir Miles Clifford, who has written the Foreword, was at that time Governor; he encouragedher to continue and brought about a collaboration with Dr. Derek Maling, who had worked on certain scientific aspects and who has contributed the present chapters on geology, climate and vegetation. Her husband, Mr. E. M. Cawkell, has addeed one on the birds of the region.
